Simple Guide to Using Other Specialists

Ecologist

You may need the advice of an ecologist if you are planning an extending or building onto land where you may disturb protected species of animals and plants. The ecology of a site can have an impact, or even limit, the work that can be undertaken. An ecologist studies the relationship between plants, animals, and their environment. They will advise on the likely impact of both them on a new project and the project on them. We would recommend that an ecologist be a member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), who have their own code of practice, and ensure their members are trained, licensed, and carry the correct insurance.

Generally, ecologists will look at protected species and undertake a number of surveys of a site to determine which species are present. Although, it is key to note they can only carry these out at certain times of the year. Based on their findings, they will then develop a strategy to mitigate any impact on these species during and after the project. This information is normally submitted with the Planning Application. The mitigation strategy will most likely form a condition for the Planning Approval to be implemented as the project is built.

Employing an ecologist will have starting costs of £300 depending on the size of the site, surveys required, and the amount of information which needs to be presented in their final report.

3HW will advise you on whether you do need to employ an ecologist, and will suggest who you can use.
